Police officials said the girl was in a car seat when she was struck in the back by gunfire around 7 p.m. on the night of June 30, as she sat in a car with her father.

According to court documents, the father and daughter were in their car near White Plains Road and East 213rd Street in the Williamsbridge neighborhood, waiting for two of the dad’s friends to arrive so they could attend a car show. After they arrived, one of the cars that dropped them off pulled alongside the father’s sedan and started revving the engine, causing it to backfire.

The sound of the backfire caused a group, including suspects Austin Morrishow and Curtis White, to scatter. Morrishow took cover behind a parked car and fired a .40-caliber handgun multiple times at the cars, prosecutors said. White chased the cars down the street with a gun as well.

The shooting reportedly took place near a memorial in progress for a man killed in a shooting the previous night.

After getting a few blocks behind them, the father checked on his daughter, which is when he realized she had been shot. The girl was rushed to the hospital in critical condition, police said at the time, and has since recovered.

The 26-year-old White was arrested not long after, but the 25-year-old Morrishow went on the run for nearly eight months before finally getting nabbed Wednesday afternoon, according to U.S. Attorney Damian Williams.

Prosecutors allege Morrishow and White broke the law by possessing ammunition after being convicted of a felony. Williams said the pair were on a busy sidewalk when they fired shots at three cars.

“Morrishow recklessly fired multiple rounds of illegally possessed ammunition at innocent New Yorkers, striking and injuring a young child and endangering the lives of other bystanders.  Instead of turning himself in, Morrishow fled for over seven months,” said Williams. “Today’s arrest keeps our promise to work relentlessly with our law enforcement partners to track down and capture fugitives — whether it takes seven days, seven weeks, or seven months — and bring them to justice.”

If convicted, Morrishow and White each face up to years in prison. Attorney information for the two was not clear.

Waffle House shooting in Indianapolis leaves 1 dead and 5 injured https://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/national-international/waffle-house-shooting-indianapolis-leaves-1-dead-5-injured/5149716/ 5149716 post https://media.nbcnewyork.com/2024/02/TLMD-TEMPE.SOSPECHOSO.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,200 A shooting at a Waffle House restaurant in Indianapolis early Monday morning killed one person and wounded five others, police said.

Officers responded to a report of a shooting at the restaurant on Lynhurst Drive around 12:30 a.m., the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department said in a statement.

Police found five victims with gunshot wounds who were transported to a hospital, including a woman who was in critical condition and died at the hospital.

A sixth man traveled separately to a hospital with a gunshot wound from the shooting and was listed in critical condition, police said.

Investigators believe an altercation between two groups of people at the restaurant escalated to gunfire. It was not immediately clear if any of the victims fired shots, police said.

No arrests were immediately made after the shooting as police continued to investigate.

NYPD zeroes in on third teen suspect in deadly Bronx subway shootout https://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/local/nypd-narrows-down-third-teen-suspect-in-deadly-bronx-subway-shootout/5147694/ 5147694 post https://media.nbcnewyork.com/2024/02/subway-station-shooting.png?fit=300,169&quality=85&strip=all A 15-year-old teen is the latest suspect wanted in connection to last week’s deadly Bronx subway station shooting that claimed the life of a 35-year-old man caught in the crossfire.

Police have now identified three suspects, all teenagers, whom they believe are responsible for the shocking display of violence at the Mt. Eden Avenue station on Feb. 12. Two of those suspects are already in custody — a third was identified in a wanted flyer circulated by the NYPD over the weekend.

A 16-year-old was arrested Thursday and charged with murder for the shooting that left one person dead and five others hurt. The suspect, who has not been identified due to his age, also faces five counts of attempted murder and a weapon possession charge.

NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said the teen was apprehended by NYPD officers and the U.S. Marshals Regional Task Force after learning he was going to be leaving his apartment on West 172nd Street, where he lives with his mother. The suspect didn’t say anything to officers and requested legal representation upon being taken into custody, Kenny confirmed.

Kenny said three teens fired 19 shots on the crowded subway platform around 4:30 p.m. last Monday. In addition to Thursday’s arrest, police believe they know where one of the other shooters is as well: in the hospital.

“We believe one of our victims, who is a 14-year-old, is possibly one of the other shooters. He had since been arrested on a separate non-fatal shooting that occurred on January 15th,” said Kenny. “In that shooting, you have two groups come together very similar to what happened on Monday. You have a group hanging out on the corner in front of a bodega. They were approached by another group. Words are exchanged, punches are thrown, guns come out.”

Investigators have maintained that the shooting was not random, and believe some of the victims include members of the two feuding groups, while others were bystanders. It appears to have been gang-related, police said, and detectives are closing in on a motive for the gunfire.

“We believe the incident on the subway itself is in retaliation to that shooting that took place up back in mid-January,” Kenny said. “We have two youth crews that are beefing. We are getting some preliminary information that it might be over some drill rapping. The incident that occurred back in January is definitely a dispute between these two crews. This incident seems to be retaliation to that.”

Bullets fly at Bronx subway station

Police say that the chaos started with a fight between the two groups of teenagers on a northbound No. 4 train approaching the Mount Eden station.

“We have two groups known to each other. They get on the train, one at 125th Street in Manhattan, we had the other get on at 161st Street in the Bronx near Yankee Stadium. Once the groups come together on the train, there’s a verbal dispute that quickly turns into a physical fight,” Kenny explained. “As the train is pulling into the station at Mt. Eden, one round is fired inside the train car. You can imagine the chaotic scene. You have a crowded train pulling onto a crowded platform.”

Around 4:30 p.m., at least one person took out a gun and fired while still on the train, police said. When the doors opened, more shots were fired on the platform, which is where each of the victims was struck — with innocent victims caught in the mix.

All five who were injured in the shooting are expected to recover. The lone fatality was a 35-year-old man from Mexico.

Shockingly, amid the chaos, the victim received no aid from bystanders on the platform.

“It’s heartbreaking to see the video of him laying on the platform dying as people just walking past him,” said Kenny. “It’s a testament to what these young kids are out here doing. Here’s a man just going about his business trying to make his way in life and makes the mistake of being curious to see what’s going on and takes one in the chest.”

The shooting is believed to be linked to gang activity, particularly involving groups associated with D Block and Burnside.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.

4 injured in Harlem bar shooting; gunman on the run https://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/local/4-injured-in-harlem-bar-shooting-gunman-on-the-run-ny-only/5147645/ 5147645 post https://media.nbcnewyork.com/2024/02/harlem_shooting.png?fit=300,169&quality=85&strip=all Four people were hospitalized early Sunday morning after a gunman opened fire in front of a popular Harlem bar, police and fire officials said.

At least three of those injured were said to be gathered outside the bar around closing time when the brazen gunman stood in the street and opened fire on the group, according to police sources. A fourth person was also hospitalized with unknown injuries. The gunshot victims were all men, ages 21, 39, and 46, police said.

None of the gunshot wounds are believed to be fatal, but the full extent of everyone’s injuries wasn’t immediately clear.

Police say the shots were fired around 4 a.m. at Just Lorraine’s Place 2 on Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Boulevard.

The suspected gunman fled on foot, and investigators have been canvassing the neighborhood for evidence and any potential surveillance video that leads them to the suspect.

Witnesses told detectives the gunman wore a red hat, dark jacket and pants.

An investigation is ongoing.

16-year-old arrested, faces murder charge in deadly Bronx subway shootout: Sources https://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/local/bronx-subway-shooting-mt-eden-arrest/5139947/ 5139947 post https://media.nbcnewyork.com/2024/02/subway-station-shooting.png?fit=300,169&quality=85&strip=all A 16-year-old was arrested and charged with murder in connection with Monday’s deadly Bronx subway station shooting, a shocking display of violence that played out on the platform in the middle of the afternoon, a senior law enforcement official with direct knowledge of the case.

It wasn’t immediately clear if the teenager taken into custody Thursday was one of the two suspects police had asked for the public’s help to find following the shooting at the Mt. Eden Avenue station on Monday that left one person dead and five others hurt.

You have a group hanging out on the corner in front of a bodega. They were approached by another group. Words are exchanged, punches are thrown, guns come out.”

Police are still searching for the third alleged shooter. Kenny said they know the suspect ran north after the subway platform shooting, and police are aware he went into a building on Davidson Avenue. Anyone who recognizes the third suspect or has information regarding his whereabouts is asked to contact police.

Investigators have maintained that the shooting was not random, and believe some of the victims include members of the two feuding groups, while others were bystanders. It appears to have been gang-related, police said, and detectives are closing in on a motive for the gunfire.

NYPD hunts 2 in deadly subway station shooting https://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/local/nypd-hunts-2-in-deadly-subway-station-shooting/5132521/ 5132521 post https://media.nbcnewyork.com/2024/02/nypd-bronx-subway.png?fit=300,169&quality=85&strip=all The NYPD released photos of two people they are looking for in connection with the deadly Bronx subway station shooting a day ago, a shocking display of violence that played out on the platform in the middle of the afternoon.

One person died when gunfire broke out around 4:30 p.m. at the Mt. Eden Avenue station along Jerome Avenue, law enforcement said. The five who were injured are all expected to recover.

Police believe two rival groups met onboard before their beef spilled out on to the platform at the Mt. Eden/Jerome Avenue subway station in The Bronx. They are now searching for two alleged shooters, police said, and have identified a third as a person of interest. Law enforcement sources familiar with the investigation said one of the young people shot Monday is the person of interest.

The name of the person who died has not been released. He was a 35-year-old homeless man described by the NYPD as an innocent bystander, who was shot in the chest.

Among the injured were two teenagers — a 14-year-old girl and a 15-year-old boy, according to police. A man and a woman in their 20s and a 71-year-old man were shot as well. Each of the injured victims was taken to the hospital, where they are expected to recover, according to police.

Investigators have maintained that the shooting was not random, and believe some of the victims include members of the two feuding groups, while others were bystanders. The motive for shootings appears to be gang-related, police said.

Bronx woman fatally shot in back after answering door, kids wounded: NYPD https://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/local/bronx-mother-fatally-shot-in-back-after-answering-door-sons-wounded-nypd-ny-only/5123752/ 5123752 post https://media.nbcnewyork.com/2024/02/bronx_shooting_spec.png?fit=300,169&quality=85&strip=all A woman was shot in the back while trying to run from her killer moments after answering her doorbell early Saturday morning, police say, and two boys inside the her apartment were wounded in the violent commotion.

Police responded to the Bronx around 5 a.m. for reports of a shooting on East 203rd Street. Arriving officers found a 40-year-old woman in grave condition and the two boys, 8 and 16, with gunshot wounds.

According to a preliminary investigation, detectives suspect the woman’s boyfriend approached the home early in the morning and rang the doorbell. After the woman answered the door, she saw him pull out a pistol and turned to run away. That’s when police say he shot her several times in the back.

In the chaos, the 8-year-old was shot in the arm and the 16-year-old was shot in the butt, police and fire department spokespersons reported. They were taken to local hospitals and were expected to recover.

Police said the woman was rushed to the hospital but life-saving measures were unsuccessful.

Kelvin Reyes is trying to process the death of his 40-year-old sister, Saida Bonilla Mejia, shot to death he says, by her boyfriend.

“Right now, I can’t believe that she is not here right now with us,” Reyes said. “One of my nephews said he saw [the gunman] trying to open the door to get inside, and they were arguing.”

Police said her boyfriend, Rosvin Mejia Castillo, was arrested on murder charges. The kids he also shot, are relatives that were visiting at the time, according to family.

“She don’t deserve that, she’s a good person,” Reyes said.

Correction (Feb. 10, 2024, 5:40 p.m.): An earlier version of this article misstated the boys were the victim’s sons.

Ex-Trump administration official dies after being shot during attempted carjacking in D.C. https://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/national-international/father-of-three-shot-during-11-hour-crime-spree-in-dc-maryland-has-died-family-says/5103964/ 5103964 post https://media.nbcnewyork.com/2024/02/28750858983-1080pnbcstations.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 Another man has died after he was shot during an 11-hour crime spree across D.C. and Prince George’s County, Maryland, his family announced Saturday.

Michael Gill, a married father of three, was waiting to pick up his wife near Mount Vernon Square on the evening of Jan. 29 when he became the first victim of random acts of violence committed by 28-year-old Artell Cunningham, who was ultimately shot and killed by police.

Gill was shot just before 6 p.m. as he sat in his Jeep Cherokee outside the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in the 900 block of K Street NW. Police said Cunningham got into the car and was inside for less than a minute before he opened fire.

Gill’s wife, Kristina, found him bleeding and lying outside of the car. He was taken to the hospital, but did not survive. He was 56.

In a statement released Saturday, Kristina Gill remembered how “his heart was evident in everything he did,” both in his personal and professional life. He coached his daughter’s soccer team, served at Holy Trinity Parish and “relished opening our home to friends and colleagues to bring people together. Friends of Mike’s knew they could always count on him to help solve a problem. He was in his element pouring a friend a drink and sharing a good story to give a laugh.”

Gill is survived by three children.

Gill served as chief operating officer of the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) and chief of staff to the former chairman from 2017 to 2019.

“[He’s] the friendliest guy you’d ever met but nobody’s fool by any stretch. Underneath that soft exterior was a determined executive who could achieve really big things,” former Chairman J. Christopher Giancarlo told News4 in an interview earlier in the week.

Giancarlo went on to describe Gill as a man with a wit and special human touch. People gravitated to him.

“In our time at the Commission, if we achieved anything, 95% of the credit goes to Mike Gill, who’s a person that never sought credit, who never sought anything for himself,” Giancarlo said.

He said Gill was highly respected by his peers and officials he encountered all over the world.

Gill also worked with the Housing Policy Council for several years, the organization’s president Ed DeMarco said in a statement.

“His HPC colleagues mourn his loss. We admired Mike personally and professionally; he was an outstanding lawyer, public servant, colleague, and community member, giving his time and talent in service to his country, his city, his church, and his community,” DeMarco’s statement said in part.

The violence that took Gill’s life also ended that of 35-year-old Alberto Vasquez, a father of two young girls. Vasquez was shot and killed when Cunningham attempted to carjack him at Third and N Streets NE at about 7:15 p.m. Though Vasquez gave him the keys, Cunningham still shot him in front of his girlfriend.

Police said Cunningham also carjacked at least three people, tried to carjack others and shot at police on DC-295 in D.C., I-95 in Laurel, Maryland, and I-395 in Baltimore. Authorities shot and killed him when he approached officers and pulled out two guns, police said.

D.C. police said they believe Cunningham was mentally ill, and that he did not know the victims.

Drew Maloney, president and CEO of the American Investment Council, was a friend of Gill’s for 15 years.

“We should take this moment to challenge government officials to do more to provide the basic safety and security that all families in Washington DC deserve. Our thoughts and prayers are with Kristina, Sean, Brian, Annika, and all those who loved him during this difficult time,” he said.

Shooter found guilty in stray bullet death of college-bound NYC teen basketball star https://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/local/crime-and-courts/shooter-found-guilty-in-stray-bullet-death-of-college-bound-nyc-teen-basketball-star/5088996/ 5088996 post https://media.nbcnewyork.com/2019/09/Brandon-Hendricks.png?fit=300,169&quality=85&strip=all A Bronx man was found guilty in the shooting death of a 17-year-old high school basketball star and academic standout who was killed after he was shot with a stray bullet at a barbecue.

Nahjim Luke was convicted on first-degree manslaughter and second-degree weapon possession, the Bronx district attorney’s office said Monday. The 26-year-old was found guilty of firing the shots that killed Brandon Hendricks, who was killed just days after he graduated from high school and had been set to play college basketball for St. John’s University.

Prosecutors alleged Luke fired shots at a group of people who had gathered for a barbecue on Davidson Avenue the evening of June 28, with one of the bullets striking Hendricks in the back. He was pronounced dead at a hospital less than an hour later.

Luke immediately fled the scene and was taken into custody about a week later, authorities previously said. He faces up to 25 years in prison.

Attorney information for Luke was not immediately clear.

Hendricks had graduated from James Monroe High School earlier in the month. He was a point guard for the Eagles, helping them make the playoffs his final season before the COVID-19 pandemic interrupted athletics programs. His social media accounts showed a deep love for the game, full of highlight videos and reports of peers going on to college offers.

A senior NYPD official said Hendricks had never had any interactions with the police in his young life. His family and friends were left reeling after his death — and wondering for whom the deadly bullet had been intended in the first place.

Hendricks’ coach took to Instagram shortly after his death to remember Hendricks as both an athletic and academic leader.

Park Slope duo among 5 dead in series of Brooklyn shootings overnight https://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/local/brooklyn-shootings-park-slope-clinton-hill-crown-heights-nypd/5073123/ 5073123 post https://media.nbcnewyork.com/2024/01/bk-shooting-scene-spec-copy.png?fit=300,169&quality=85&strip=all Nearly a half-dozen people were killed in a series of overnight shootings across Brooklyn, authorities say.

All the shootings happened within a four-window in neighborhoods including Park Slope, Clinton Hill and Crown Heights. Police haven’t said whether they believe any of the gun violence may be connected.

Gunfire first erupted on Schenectady Avenue in Crown Heights. Cops were called to the scene shortly after 11 p.m. Wednesday and found a 37-year-old man had been shot in the neck. He was pronounced dead at a hospital. One person of interest is in custody, though that is the only individual detained in any of the shootings at this time.

Less than a half-hour later, just before midnight, the NYPD responded to a 911 call about a man shot at Atlantic and Rockaway avenues in Brownsville. They encountered a 28-year-old with multiple gunshot wounds to the torso. He also was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Next, officers responded to 2nd Street in Park Slope just after 1 a.m. Thursday. A 34-year-old woman and a 34-year-old man were found shot in the head. Both were pronounced dead at the scene. A gun was found near the man, and authorities say that case is being investigated as a murder-suicide.

Yet another person was killed in the borough shortly before 3 a.m., this time in Clinton Hill. Cops responding to a 911 call found a 35-year-old man shot in the head on Hall Street. He was pronounced dead at a hospital.

None of the victims have been identified. Each of the investigations is ongoing.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.

Jill Biden tells school principals ‘enough is enough' while promoting a gun safety initiative https://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/national-international/white-house-launches-gun-safety-initiative-with-first-lady-jill-biden/5072905/ 5072905 post https://media.nbcnewyork.com/2024/01/AP24025759760881.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,200 Jill Biden on Thursday declared that “enough is enough” as she did her part to encourage school leaders to promote storing firearms safely to help protect children.

Guns are the leading cause of death for American children.

A new initiative was announced at a White House event for school principals with the first lady and Education Secretary Miguel Cardona. Stefanie Feldman and Greg Jackson, both of the recently established White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention, also participated.

Biden, who teaches English at a Virginia community college, told the principals that parents trust them, and she encouraged them to be part of the solution.

“You can show parents that they can be part of preventing the next shooting, the next suicide, the next accident,” she said.

The first lady said the issue matters to President Joe Biden.

“It weighs on his heart every day, and he’s not going to stop fighting until we’ve solved it,” she said.

As part of the announcement, the Justice Department is releasing a guide to safe firearm storage and the Education Department will distribute materials to schools to share with families.

The administration has relied on initiatives like this one, which involves limited executive action and promoting voluntary measures, at a time when tougher gun control proposals are nonstarters in Congress.

There’s no federal law requiring gun owners to lock up their firearms, although the White House has encouraged such rules to be implemented at the state level.

Jill Biden said the number of children lost to gun violence is “unfathomable.”

“Enough is enough. Enough pain. Enough death. No more funerals,” she said. “I don’t want to have to put my hand on another cross with an 8-year-old’s name. We must change this.”

What to Know

  • U.S. prosecutors will seek the death penalty against a white supremacist gunman who killed 10 Black people inside a supermarket in Buffalo
  • Payton Gendron is already is serving a life sentence with no chance of parole after he pleaded guilty to state charges of murder and domestic terrorism in the 2022 massacre
  • New York does not have capital punishment, but the Justice Department had the option of seeking the death penalty in a separate federal hate crimes case

Federal prosecutors said Friday that they will seek the death penalty against a white supremacist who killed 10 Black people at a Buffalo supermarket.

Payton Gendron, 20, is already serving a sentence of life in prison with no chance of parole after he pleaded guilty to state charges of murder and hate-motivated domestic terrorism in the 2022 attack.

New York does not have capital punishment, but the Justice Department had the option of seeking the death penalty in a separate federal hate crimes case. The 20-year-old had promised to plead guilty in that case if prosecutors agreed not to seek the death penalty.

The decision marks the first time that President Joe Biden’s Justice Department has authorized a new pursuit of the death penalty.

The alleged gunman drove more than 200 miles (320 kilometers) from his home in rural Conklin, New York, to a Tops Friendly Market in Buffalo’s largely Black East Side neighborhood, where he shot eight supermarket customers, the store security guard and a church deacon who drove shoppers to and from the store with their groceries. Three people were wounded but survived.

In court papers announcing the decision to seek the death penalty, Trini Ross, the U.S. attorney for western New York, cited the substantial planning that went into the shooting, including the choice of location, which she said was meant to “maximize the number of Black victims.”

Relatives of the victims — who ranged in age from 32 to 86 — have expressed mixed views on whether they thought federal prosecutors should pursue the death penalty. Mark Talley, whose 63-year-old mother, Geraldine Talley, was killed, said he “wasn’t necessarily disappointed” by the decision, even if he would have preferred Gendron spend his life behind bars.

“It would have satisfied me more knowing he would have spent the rest of his life in prison being surrounded by the population of people he tried to kill,” Talley said.

In a joint statement, attorneys for some of victims’ relatives said the decision “provides a pathway to both relief and a measure of closure for the victims and their families.”

An attorney for the 20-year-old, Sonya Zoghlin, said she was “deeply disappointed” by the government’s decision to seek the death penalty, noting that her client was 18 at the time of the shooting.

“Rather than a prolonged and traumatic capital prosecution, the efforts of the federal government would be better spent on combatting the forces that facilitated this terrible crime, including easy access to deadly weapons and the failure of social media companies to moderate the hateful rhetoric and images that circulate online,” Zoghlin said in a statement.

Federal death penalty cases have become a rarity since the election of Biden, a Democrat who opposes capital punishment. Under the leadership of Attorney General Merrick Garland, the Justice Department has permitted the continuation of two capital prosecutions and withdrawn from pursuing death in more than two dozen cases.

Garland instituted a moratorium on federal executions in 2021 pending a review of procedures. Although the moratorium does not prevent prosecutors from seeking death sentences, the Justice Department has done so sparingly.

It successfully sought the death penalty for an antisemitic gunman who murdered 11 people at a Pittsburgh synagogue, though that attack was authorized as a death penalty case before Garland took office. It also went ahead last year with an effort to get the death sentence against an Islamic extremist who killed eight people on a New York City bike path, though a lack of a unanimous jury meant that prosecution resulted in a life sentence.

The Justice Department has declined to pursue the death penalty in other mass killings, including against the gunman who killed 23 people at a Walmart in El Paso, Texas.

The alleged gunman carried out his attack on May 14, 2022, using a semi-automatic marked with racial slurs and phrases including “The Great Replacement,” a reference to a conspiracy theory that there’s a plot to diminish the influence of white people.

Prosecutors met Friday with several family members of victims before the decision to seek the death penalty was made public.

Pamela Pritchett, whose 77-year-old mother, Pearl Young, was killed in the attack, said the mood was somber.

“I will be scarred. Everybody, every family, the community of the East Side, we’re all gonna be scarred,” she said. “For me, my goal is to look at the scar and know that I am healed.”

The suspected shooter did not appear at a status conference held Friday afternoon.

Woman killed, driver badly injured after gunmen open fire on car in Queens: Police https://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/local/woman-killed-driver-badly-injured-after-gunmen-open-fire-on-car-in-queens-police/4985716/ 4985716 post https://media.nbcnewyork.com/2023/12/Richmond-Hill-shooting.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 Police are looking for two gunmen who ran down a Queens street and opened fire into a car, shooting two people — killing a woman and leaving the driver injured, police said.

The bullets flew on Liberty Street near 127th Street just before midnight, but police didn’t hear about it for about an hour into Wednesday morning. Surveillance video captured the violence in Richmond Hill, as a pair in dark hooded sweatshirts slinked up to a black Honda and opened fire. Someone else on the sidewalk just ahead of them then turned, pulled out a weapon and fired into the windshield, video showed.

The 39-year-old man behind the wheel was seriously injured, police said, but was able to drive nearly 20 minutes to a neighboring police precinct 2.5 miles away to get help. By the time he got there, the 28-year-old woman in the car with him, Clarisa Burgos, had died from a gunshot to the head, according to police.

Police said the driver of the car was still in the hospital recovering.

Video showed the shooters scatter after firing multiple times. Police canvassed the neighborhood for clues overnight and talked to witnesses, some of whom told NBC New York that the gunfire came loud and fast.

“It was like rapid gun shots,” said Kevin Alli, adding that he thought about 17 shots were fired in all. Another person who lives in the neighborhood said that the neighborhood is not known to be violent, making the shooting all that more surprising.

It was not immediately clear what led up to the shooting or what the motivation may have been. Anyone with information regarding the suspects is asked to contact police, as they look to identify the shooters.

Father gunned down in front of his young sons at NJ complex; shooter on the run https://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/local/man-dead-child-wounded-in-new-jersey-shooting-prosecutors/4957316/ 4957316 post https://media.nbcnewyork.com/2023/12/new_jersey_shooting.png?fit=300,169&quality=85&strip=all A father is dead and his four-year-old son injured following a shooting outside a housing complex in New Jersey, investigators and neighbors said Saturday.

Francis Medina was reportedly walking home with his two young sons when eyewitnesses said a gunman hopped out of a car around 2 p.m. and fired at least a dozen rounds at the complex near Mill Street in Belleville.

The 37-year-old father was struck by the barrage of gunfire, as well as his youngest son, who was struck in the leg. His six-year-old brother was unharmed.

A neighbor who heard the shots pierce the otherwise quiet afternoon sprinted over to the kids and helped them inside, covering their eyes to they wouldn’t see their father in pain. Medina pleading with his final words, “my sons, my sons, be careful my sons,” according to the neighbor.

The father died at a nearby hospital.

Over in Paterson, police were spotted surrounding an abandoned black Chevy Equinox — the same car eyewitnesses said the gunman hopped out of before firing. Officials did not immediately confirm if the car was linked to the murder investigation.

The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, which is leading the investigation with assistance from Belleville Police, is believed to be searching for the gunman and a getaway driver. No further information on any potential suspect has been released.

“That is sad, especially coming towards the holiday for this stuff to happen. I just feel sorry for the family,” one neighbor said.

Texas gunman's parents among 6 killed in wave of violence in Austin, San Antonio https://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/national-international/multiple-killed-and-2-police-officers-injured-after-shooting-spree-in-texas/4924921/ 4924921 post https://media.nbcnewyork.com/2023/12/Screen-Shot-2023-12-06-at-5.16.31-AM.png?fit=300,140&quality=85&strip=all

What to Know

  • Man arrested, accused of multiple counts of capital murder for six slayings. Three others are injured and recovering.
  • The identities of the victims will be released after their families are notified of their deaths.
  • Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said the suspect is a “hardened criminal” and vows to “impose the full weight of law” on the suspect “for his despicable crimes.”

A Texas man suspected of killing his parents in San Antonio and four others in Austin in a violent trail of separate attacks had cut off his ankle monitor from a previous misdemeanor domestic violence arrest, authorities said Thursday.

The suspect, 34-year-old Shane James Jr., also had been confronted by deputies in August for a mental health call when he was naked at his parents’ home, Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar said at a news conference Wednesday afternoon. But deputies did not arrest him at that time, despite a warrant for cutting off the ankle monitor.

Salazar tentatively identified the victims in Bexar County as 56-year-old Shane M. James Sr. and 55-year-old Phyllis James. The victims are believed to be the parents of the suspect.

Salazar said the suspect’s parents were believed to have been shot multiple times sometime between 10 p.m. on Dec. 4 and 9 a.m. on Dec. 5. The sheriff said the suspect then used his father’s car to get to Travis County where the other shootings occurred.

“This occurred, and then the suspect drove to Austin and did what he did there,” Salazar previously told reporters.

The sheriff did not reveal the identities of any of the victims in Travis County.

Salazar said James, who had been accused of family violence toward his parents and a sibling in January 2022, would be charged with murder or capital murder in his county in the coming days.

Our hearts break for the shooting victims, injured officers, their families, and our communities impacted by yesterday’s senseless and tragic gun violence.

Travis County District Attorney’s Office

The spate of violence began in Travis County Tuesday with the shooting of a police officer outside an Austin high school and ended with the suspect crashing his car during a police pursuit that evening, Austin interim Police Chief Robin Henderson said.

The four who died in Travis County were found in two homes in Austin, roughly 80 miles away from San Antonio.

Henderson said it was unclear what, if any, relationship the man had to the victims in Travis County.

Austin Police identified the suspect in the shootings Wednesday afternoon and released a booking photo. Online jail records in Travis County show he was being held on charges of capital murder and misdemeanors from other counties. The records do not indicate whether James has an attorney and several people listed as relatives of James in public records did not immediately respond to phone messages Wednesday.

James has been remanded without bond.

“We strongly believe one suspect is responsible for all of the incidents,” Henderson said during a news conference early Wednesday.

Henderson said authorities did not determine the Austin attacks were connected until the final one at a home, which happened more than eight hours after a school police officer was shot and wounded in a high school parking lot on the other side of the city.

In a statement, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) said the state would “impose the full weight of law on this criminal for his despicable crimes.”

“Texans grieve for the loved ones of the six Texans who were murdered by a hardened criminal who must never see the light of day again,” Abbott said in the statement.

Similarly, in a statement, President Joe Biden called the Texas and Las Vegas shootings “horrific” and demanded Congress to put forth an assault weapons ban and to pass national red flag laws.

“Jill and I join citizens across our nation in praying for the families of our fallen, and for those who were injured during these latest acts of senseless violence,” Biden said in the statement.

“Republican lawmakers must join with Democrats in Congress to ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, pass a national red flag law, enact universal background checks, require the safe storage of guns, and advance other commonsense measures that will help stem the tide of gun violence,” Biden said.

The attacks were the country’s 42nd mass killings this year, according to a database maintained by The Associated Press and USA Today in partnership with Northeastern University. At least 217 people have died this year in those killings, which are defined as incidents in which four or more people have died within 24 hours, not including the killer – the same definition used by the FBI.

A timeline provided by Texas authorities revealed the wide ground the suspect allegedly covered between the attacks.

Henderson said it began with the Austin school district police officer being shot in the leg at about 10:45 a.m. Tuesday outside Northeast Early College High School. Then, at about noon, police who responded to a home after getting calls about gunshots found two people with signs of trauma. Police said one was dead and the other died at a hospital.

Austin ISD Police gather outside Northeast Early College High School after an officer was shot Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2023.

Daniel Moyer, who lives in the neighborhood, said the area is typically peaceful and felt shaken Wednesday. The neighborhood in south Austin is more than 10 miles from the high school where the officer was shot.

“It could have been me and my wife,” Moyer said.

Another shooting happened shortly before 5 p.m. when a male cyclist suffered injuries that were not life threatening.

About two hours later, police responded to a call of a burglary in progress at another home and found two people dead there. Henderson did not say how the four people in Austin died.

Henderson said that during the call at the last residence, an Austin police officer saw a man in the backyard. The man shot and wounded the officer who returned fire and was taken to a hospital, where he was listed in stable condition.

Police said the suspect, who was not hit, drove away and police chased him. He crashed at about 7:15 p.m. at a highway intersection and was taken into custody. The man had a gun, Henderson said.

“The male suspect who was taken into custody was transported to the Travis County Jail and is charged with capital murder,” Henderson said. “He was also booked in for an outstanding assault with injury family violence warrant. Further charges are pending.”

Meanwhile, inside the home, officers discovered the bodies of two people.

She said the officer who was shot and the other officers were wearing body cameras and the video would be released within 10 business days.

The investigations into the shootings are ongoing.

NBC News also confirmed James was an infantry officer in the Army from February 2013 to August 2015. His last rank was first lieutenant. He had no deployments and service on Aug. 17, 2015.

The Travis County District Attorney’s Office thanked the Austin Police, Austin ISD Police, Texas DPS, U.S. Marshals and FBI for their quick work apprehending the suspect.

Suspect arrested after 3 people found shot to death inside NJ condo: Police https://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/local/three-people-found-shot-to-death-inside-nj-condo-police/4898228/ 4898228 post https://media.nbcnewyork.com/2023/11/South-Plainfield-police.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169

What to Know

  • Three people, two men and a woman, were shot and killed inside a New Jersey condo, according to police, and a neighbor said it wasn’t the first time there had been trouble at the apartment before.
  • Officers responded to a home on Coppola Drive off New Durham Road in South Plainfield around 9 a.m. Monday after a neighbor reported hearing shots fired at the Traditions condo complex, the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office said
  • The woman and one of the men were pronounced dead at the scene; Another man, who suffered multiple gun shot wounds, was taken to the hospital. He later died from his injuries

A suspect was arrested after he allegedly shot and killed his grandparents and uncle inside a New Jersey condo, according to police, and a neighbor said it wasn’t the first time there had been trouble at the apartment before.

Officers responded to the home on Coppola Drive off New Durham Road in South Plainfield around 9 a.m. Monday after a neighbor reported hearing shots fired at the Traditions condo complex, the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office said in a press release. After arriving, officers found three people — two men and a woman — who had suffered gunshot wounds.

Married couple Dilipkumar and Bindu Brahmbhatt, both of whom were 72 years old, were found shot to death in the second-floor apartment, police said. Their son, 38-year-old Yashkumar Brahmbhatt, was also found to have suffered multiple gunshot wounds. He was taken to the hospital, where he died.

A suspect was taken into custody for questioning at the scene and later charged. Om Brahmbhatt was charged with three counts of first-degree murder and second-degree weapon possession. The 23-year-old Brahmbhatt had just moved to New Jersey within the past couple months for school, sources said, and had been living at the condo.

He was taken to the Middlesex County Adult Correctional Center pending a pre-trial detention hearing; it wasn’t immediately clear whether he had an attorney and a listed number for him couldn’t be found.

It was not clear what led up to the shooting. A neighbor told NBC New York that it wasn’t the first time police had been called to the condo.

“I didn’t really know them, I just know one time the police were there for a domestic violence call,” said neighbor Jim Short, who lives upstairs from the unit where the three people were found dead. “Can happen anywhere but it is really creepy, it’s right downstairs.”

The Traditions apartment complex, home to many young families who emigrated from India, is equipped with dozens of security cameras that neighbors hoped could help police.

“There’s cameras all over and there are cameras coming in and out of the complex and every building has cameras outside and inside the breezeway. So hopefully that can help,” said another neighbor, Victor Orozco.

An investigation led by the South Plainfield Police Department is ongoing. Anyone with information regarding the shooting is asked to call town police or the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office.

Gunman wounds 4 before killing self at Ohio Walmart, police say https://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/national-international/gunman-wounds-4-kills-self-at-ohio-walmart-police-say/4881756/ 4881756 post https://media.nbcnewyork.com/2023/11/Screen-Shot-2023-11-21-at-5.02.08-PM.png?fit=300,171&quality=85&strip=all A gunman opened fire Monday evening inside a Walmart in Ohio and wounded four people before killing himself — the second shooting in 24 hours to take place at a store operated by the retail giant.

The attack at the Walmart in Beavercreek, a suburb of Dayton, just days before Thanksgiving injured four shoppers: three women and a man. Police said three were in stable condition and one woman in critical but stable condition on Tuesday afternoon at area hospitals.

Authorities declined to release the identities of the victims, including their races, saying they had not ruled out that the attack was racially motivated.

“Tragedy struck our beloved community Monday evening, and, in the face of adversity, the strength of our community shines through,” Beavercreek Mayor Bob Stone said during a Tuesday news conference.

Walmart said it was working closely with investigators to try to determine why the shooter, identified as 20-year-old Benjamin Charles Jones, of Dayton, opened fire.

Police said Jones entered the store at about 8:30 p.m. Monday wielding a Hi-Point 45-caliber Carbine long gun. He shot an undetermined number of rounds, leaving injured victims throughout the building, before turning the weapon on himself, authorities said.

“We’re heartbroken by what’s happened at our Beavercreek, Ohio store. This remains a developing situation, and we’re working closely with investigators on the scene,” Walmart said in a statement.

Christopher Suffron told WHIO-TV in Dayton that he was shopping with his wife when they heard five or six shots ring out. “I turned around and told her to get behind me,” he said.

Suffron said he then saw the shooter about 10 feet away and the couple ran out of the store through nearby receiving doors. As they escaped, he said he heard another five or six shots.

The shooting happened almost exactly one day after a man shot and killed a woman before fatally shooting himself outside a Walmart in Anchorage, Alaska. Police in Anchorage said Tuesday it was a domestic-violence related crime. They said in a statement no one else was involved.

Both shootings came nearly a year after a Walmart supervisor in Chesapeake, Virginia, fatally shot six employees two days before Thanksgiving.

Walmart, which has police outposts in some of its 4,600 locations nationwide, has taken steps over the years to address gun violence. The retailer based in Bentonville, Arkansas, launched a computer-based active shooter training in 2015 that focused on three pillars: avoid the danger, keep your distance and lastly, defend.

Then in 2019, after a white gunman killed 23 people at a Walmart in El Paso, Texas, in a racist attack that targeted Hispanic shoppers, Walmart discontinued sales of certain kinds of ammunition. It also asked that customers no longer openly carry firearms in its stores. The retailer now sells only hunting rifles and related ammunition.

“We take a comprehensive approach to promoting a safe shopping and work environment—including policies, training, monitoring, and response—as well as regular reviews of security protocols and practices,” Joe Pennington, a company spokesperson, said in a statement. “While we don’t publicly discuss security measures we take in our stores, the safety of our associates and customers is a top priority.”

The store in Ohio where Monday’s shooting took place was the scene of a fatal shooting involving police almost 10 years ago. A white police officer shot 22-year-old John Crawford III after he picked up an unpackaged pellet rifle he found on a shelf in August 2014. The family of the Black man reached a settlement of $1.7 million with the city of Beavercreek. The settlement included changes in police policy.

Beavercreek Mayor Stone said Monday’s shooting brought the earlier case to mind.

“It can’t help but bring back memories,” he said. “You know, it’s a tragedy all in itself, though, and this is the tragedy we are grieving for, and it’s a shame in this way that it has to be compared to the previous shooting.”

2 men sitting in car critically wounded after gunman opens fire in the Bronx: NYPD https://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/local/2-men-sitting-in-car-critically-wounded-after-gunman-opens-fire-in-the-bronx-nypd-spec/4875356/ 4875356 post https://media.nbcnewyork.com/2023/11/bronx_shooting.png?fit=300,169&quality=85&strip=all Police in the Bronx are looking for a gunman who opened fire in the borough’s Little Italy neighborhood early Saturday morning, leaving two victims critically wounded.

Investigators say the two victims were shot while sitting in a car in a parking lot off Arthur Avenue, an area that is normally busy with shoppers.

Police said a 19-year-old was shot multiple times and a 22-year-old once in the armpit. Both men were initially transported to the hospital in critical condition.

The SUV that the two men were sitting inside had bullet holes throughout several front windows.

Police believe some sort of argument broke out before the gunman opened fire, then got away in a beige sedan.

In surveillance video obtained by News 4, a man can be seen getting out of the driver’s seat of the SUV and running down Arthur Avenue. Witnesses say he was banging on an ambulance trying to get help.

Some shoppers had just arrived in the area moments before the gunfire shot across the parking lot. Regular shoppers of the typically busy neighborhood, especially the weekend before Thanksgiving, were shocked at what had unfolded.

“The way I understand it, they were all friends. That’s what people are saying, they know each other. Some kind of dispute, I don’t know but something like that,” Massimo Celso said.

Mother of 6-year-old boy who shot teacher gets 21 months for marijuana use while owning a gun https://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/national-international/mother-of-boy-6-who-shot-virginia-teacher-faces-sentencing-for-marijuana-use-while-owning-a-gun/4865884/ 4865884 post https://media.nbcnewyork.com/2023/01/GettyImages-1246066075.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 The mother of a 6-year-old boy who shot his teacher in Virginia was sentenced Wednesday to 21 months in prison for using marijuana while owning a firearm, which is illegal under U.S. law.

Deja Taylor’s son took her handgun to school and shot Abby Zwerner in her first-grade classroom in January, seriously wounding the educator. Investigators later found nearly an ounce of marijuana in Taylor’s bedroom and evidence of frequent drug use in her text messages and paraphernalia.

Taylor’s sentencing in a U.S. District Court offered the first measure of accountability for January’s shooting, which revived a national dialogue about gun violence and roiled the military shipbuilding city of Newport News.

Taylor, 26, still faces a separate sentencing in December on the state level for felony child neglect. And Zwerner is suing the school system for $40 million, alleging that administrators ignored multiple warnings the boy had a gun.

The federal case against Taylor comes at a time when marijuana is legal in many states, including Virginia, while many Americans own firearms.

Some U.S. courts in other parts of the country have ruled against the federal law that bans drug users from having guns. But the law remains in effect in many states and has been used to charge others including Hunter Biden, President Joe Biden’s son.

Federal prosecutors in Virginia argued in court filings that Taylor’s “chronic, persistent and … life-affecting abuse extends this case far beyond any occasional and/or recreational use.”

Prosecutors had sought a 21-month prison sentence.

“This case is not a marijuana case,” they wrote. “It is a case that underscores the inherently dangerous nature and circumstances that arise from the caustic cocktail of mixing consistent and prolonged controlled substance use with a lethal firearm.”

Taylor agreed in June to a negotiated guilty plea. She was convicted of using marijuana while owning a gun as well as lying about her drug use on a federal form when she bought the gun.

Taylor’s attorneys had asked the judge for probation and home confinement, according to court filings. They argued Taylor needs counseling for issues that include schizoaffective disorder, a condition that shares symptoms with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

“Ms. Taylor is deeply saddened, extremely despondent, and completely remorseful for the unintended consequences and mistakes that led to this horrible shooting,” her attorneys wrote.

They also said she needs treatment for marijuana addiction.

“Addiction is a disease and incarceration is not the cure,” her attorneys wrote.

Taylor’s attorneys also argued that the U.S. Supreme Court could eventually strike down the federal ban on drug users owning guns. For example, the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans ruled in August that drug users should not automatically be banned from having guns.

Other lower courts have upheld the ban and the Justice Department has appealed the 5th Circuit ruling to the Supreme Court. The high court has not yet decided whether to take up the case.

Federal law generally prohibits people from possessing firearms if they have been convicted of a felony, been committed to a mental institution or are an unlawful user of a controlled substance, among other things.

The United States Sentencing Commission reported that nearly 8,700 people were convicted under the law last year. The commission did not provide a detailed breakdown of how many were charged because of their drug use. But it said nearly 88% of them were convicted because of a prior felony conviction.

Karen O’Keefe, director of state policies for the pro-legalization group Marijuana Policy Project, told The Associated Press in June that about 18% of Americans admitted to using cannabis in the last year and about 40% owned guns.

Taylor’s grandfather has had full custody of her son, now age 7, since the shooting, according to court documents.

Taylor’s son told authorities he obtained the gun by climbing onto a drawer to reach the top of a dresser, where the firearm was in his mom’s purse. Taylor initially told investigators she had secured her gun with a trigger lock, but investigators never found one.

Immediately after the shooting, the child told a reading specialist who restrained him: “I shot that (expletive) dead,” and “I got my mom’s gun last night,” according to search warrants.

It was not the first time Taylor’s gun was fired in public, prosecutors wrote. Taylor shot at her son’s father in December after seeing him with his girlfriend.

“u kouldve killed me,” the father said to Taylor in a text message, according to a brief from prosecutors.

Sometime after her son shot his teacher, Taylor smoked two blunts, prosecutors added. She also failed drug tests while awaiting sentencing on the federal charges.

Taylor’s attorneys said Taylor “vulnerably stands before this court humiliated, contrite and saddened.”

A 15-year-old student at a Newark high school was shot during a drive-by after students were forced to evacuate the school due to reports of a gas leak, according to police.

Gunshots rang out just after noon on Monday near Central High School, at the corner of 17th Avenue and Sayre Street, Newark Public Safety Director Fritz Fragé said. Officers who responded to the scene found the teenage victim, a male, had been shot in the shoulder.

This cell phone video shows a crowd of students helping the 15-year old, as he lay on the ground after being shot. He was taken to University Hospital and is expected to recover, police said.

One student said about three or four shots were fired in all.

It wasn’t clear if the student had been targeted or whether it was a random shooting, Newark Mayor Ras Baraka and schools superintendent Roger Leon said at a press conference. They did say that the evacuation of the school beforehand had not been planned, as two reported gas leaks forced hundreds of students outside.

Because it was not a planned event, there was not the same robust police and security presence at the school as there is at the start and end of the school day, officials said.

“In the middle of the school day when we expect people to be in school, police are not usually outside at that time,” Baraka said. “The anxiety level is high, when you hear school and shooting, everyone is going to rush to the school anticipating something horrible happened, and something horrible did happen.”

PSE&G said there was a report of a gas leak, but no actual gas leak had been detected.

The student was not shot on school property, but rather across the street as students were waiting during the evacuation, Baraka and Leon clarified. Dozens of parents rushed to the high school to pick up their children after panicked receiving texts from their kids.

Police were searching for the gunman. No other information was immediately available. An investigation is ongoing.

Man arrested for shooting mother of his child in Brooklyn: Police https://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/local/man-arrested-for-shooting-mother-of-his-child-in-brooklyn-police/4840342/ 4840342 post https://media.nbcnewyork.com/2023/11/Boerum-Hill-shooting.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 An alleged shooter was arrested after police said that he opened fire on the mother of his child on a Brooklyn street.

The shots were fired just before 11 a.m. on Bond Street in Boerum Hill, according to police, who said a man on an electric bike pulled out a firearm and shot once. Investigators said the victim was struck by a bullet in her left arm; she was taken to the hospital, where she was expected to survive.

Police made an arrest shortly after the shooting, though the suspect’s name and the charges against him have not yet been released. The alleged gunman was taken into custody near Bergen Street and Washington Avenue. It was not immediately clear if he still had the electric bike with him at the time.

Detectives told NBC New York that the man is the father of the victim’s child. Those who live in the area said the shooting was upsetting but not overly surprising.

Attorney information for the suspect was not immediately clear.

Suspect in Brooklyn double murder dies after shot by police during attempted arrest https://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/local/suspect-in-brooklyn-double-murder-shot-by-police/4819797/ 4819797 post https://media.nbcnewyork.com/2023/10/Brooklyn-dbl-shooting.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 The suspected gunman in the shooting death of a father and stepson in a Brooklyn apartment building died after he was shot by police attempting to take him into custody, according to the NYPD.

Officers were trying to arrest Jason Pass, 47, the suspect in Sunday’s double murder, when he was shot by police after they alleged he had a knife in his hand, the department said.

Early Wednesday, police pulled over a car Pass was driving on Bay 44th Street. He got out of the vehicle with a knife and began to run away, police said. After a pursuit and a confrontation with Pass, police said he charged at officers with the knife and that is when they opened fire.

“He didn’t give us a choice, he decided to charge at officers forcing them to protect themselves,” said NYPD Chief of Patrol John Chell.

An image of the knife police said Jason Pass had at the time of his arrest.

Pass was shot four times, three times in the chest and one time in his right leg, according to police. Pass was still alive after the shooting and was rushed to NYU Langone Hospital in Brooklyn, where he later died. Multiple officers went to the hospital to be treated for ringing in the ear after the shooting.

Chell said officers tried to negotiate with Pass before he was shot.

The shooting by police came after officers were called to a building on Brooklyn Avenue in East Flatbush just before 11 p.m. Sunday following an argument, according to police. Surveillance video showed Pass confronting upstairs neighbors in a dispute over noise.

Detectives said 47-year-old Bladimy Muthurin, his wife and his 27-year-old stepson came out into the hallway, and moments after Pass knocked on their door, Muthurin confronted him with scissors. Pass responded by pulling out a gun, and police said he shot and killed the father and stepson.

A witness said Muthurin was initially still alive, but Pass came back and shot him again. Both victims were found in a fourth-floor hallway with gunshot wounds to the head and body.

Chell described the shooting as a “double horrific homicide.”

Pass calmly left the building through an elevator right after the shooting, police said. Police said a license-plate reader identified the vehicle that Pass was driving Wednesday and led to the traffic stop.

Police officials said they are investigating a working theory that Pass is a former corrections officer.

NYPD officials brief the media on the officer-involved shooting that led to the suspect’s death.

Gunman on the run after killing 2 men inside Brooklyn apartment building: Police https://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/local/gunman-on-the-run-after-killing-2-men-inside-brooklyn-apartment-building-police/4813609/ 4813609 post https://media.nbcnewyork.com/2023/10/Brooklyn-dbl-shooting.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 Two men were shot and killed inside a Brooklyn apartment building, according to police, who are still looking for the gunman.

Officers were called to the building on Brooklyn Avenue in East Flatbush just before 11 p.m. Sunday, police said, following some type of argument. It was not clear what the argument was about, but it ultimately led to gunfire.

Detectives said the 47-year-old and 27-year-old victims were found in a fourth-floor hallway with gunshot wounds to the head and body. Investigators seen going in and out of the building were working to determine the connection between the pair.

According to the investigation, which was still in its early stages, it appeared the two victims were arguing with each other when a third person, the shooter, stepped into the feud and opened fire on both of them. The suspect then took off right after and was seen leaving the area, law enforcement told NBC New York.

The alleged shooter was described as a bald man wearing a blue jacket and jeans. The NYPD’s K-9 unit had been called in to help with the search.

No arrests have yet been made.

What happened just before this tragedy, as police search for the person responsible. as we bring you back live… at this hour… it is still unclear what exactly was the argument that led to this episode of gun violence

Biden calls for GOP to ‘fulfill their obligation' to keep Americans safe after Maine mass shooting https://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/national-international/biden-calls-for-gop-to-fulfill-their-obligation-to-keep-americans-safe-after-maine-mass-shooting/4808835/ 4808835 post https://media.nbcnewyork.com/2023/09/AP23243675869561.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,200 President Joe Biden called on Republicans in Congress to help keep Americans safe from gun violence and praised police for their efforts to track down the Maine gunman who killed 18 people.

The Army reservist who opened fire in a bowling alley and then at a bar in Lewiston, Maine, Wednesday night was found dead Friday from a self-inflicted gunshot. That ended an intensive two-day search for the gunman.

Biden said the shooting and anxious search for the gunman has been tragic “not just for Lewiston, Maine, but for our entire country.”

The shooting spree has been devastating for the families of those killed and injured, leaving “scores of family and friends praying and experiencing trauma no one ever wants to imagine,” he said in a statement late Friday.

Biden praised the police for their intense search over two days: “Numerous brave law enforcement officers have worked around the clock to find this suspect and prevent the loss of more innocent life – all while risking their own. They are the best of us,” he said.

He thanked Maine Gov. Janet Mills for “her steady leadership during this time of crisis.” And he said his administration “would provide everything that is needed to support the people of Maine.”

And he asked for congressional help.

“Americans should not have to live like this,” he said. “I once again call on Republicans in Congress to fulfill their obligation to keep the American people safe. Until that day comes, I will continue to do everything in my power to end this gun violence epidemic. The Lewiston community – and all Americans – deserve nothing less.”

Philadelphia store worker shoots and kills robber stuffing pockets with cash, police say https://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/national-international/southwest-philly-store-worker-shoots-kills-robber/4805199/ 4805199 post https://media.nbcnewyork.com/2023/10/Kingsessing-store-shooting.png?fit=300,169&quality=85&strip=all A worker in a corner store shot and killed an armed robber late Wednesday night, Philadelphia police said.

The robber had cash stuffed in one of his pockets when police officers arrived at the bodega, Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small said.

The man — believed to be in his late 20s — was found on the floor behind the counter bleeding from multiple gunshot wounds to his chest and torso, Small said.

Medics pronounced the man dead on the scene minutes later.

The man had entered the store partially masked and holding a gun.

“He pointed it at one of the employees, then went behind the counter and point-of-gun started taking money from the cash register,” Small said.

“That’s when the store employee who was also behind the counter pulled his weapon and fired several shots.”

You could “clearly see that at least one of the 28-year-old’s pockets is stuffed with money,” Small said. Investigators believe that cash and other money seen on the ground was stolen from the cash register by the gunshot victim.

“Preliminary information it appears to be self-defense,” since the robber was armed with a gun, Small said.

Investigators recovered the guns of both the dead robber and store worker, Small said.

The store worker remained on the scene and cooperated with investigators, police said. Others also cooperated with the investigation.

Police looked over interior store surveillance cameras to corroborate witness testimonies, investigators said.

The store had been robbed in the past, Small said.

The incident occurred around 5:30 a.m. Wednesday, when police said they received a call about a robbery in progress at a home in Kew Gardens Hills, police said. When officers arrived at the scene in the typically quiet neighborhood, they found the victim with at least one gunshot wound.

The victim, a man whose age was not immediately clear, was rushed to the hospital with critical injuries, police said.

Security video shows the suspect shouting and breaking the front window, before destroying the camera. Police said as many as eight men wearing masks and gloves came to the house on 62nd Avenue to rob its residents.

“It’s quite frightening because they say ‘don’t move be quiet or I’ll shoot,’ so I believe they really will shoot,” a resident of the home, Lu, told News 4. “I was sleeping and four guys rushed into my room and they asked for money.”

The masked thieves also ransacked a woman’s apartment and terrified her 7-year-old daughter.

It was not clear how the robbers chose this house, but after the man was shot some fled on foot and others were seen driving away in a black vehicle.

Morgan State University shooting: Baltimore police ask for help in IDing ‘persons of interest' https://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/national-international/baltimore-police-ask-for-help-iding-persons-of-interest-seen-in-video-in-morgan-state-shooting/4742920/ 4742920 post https://media.nbcnewyork.com/2023/10/OTT-Evening-Newscast-Oct.-4-2023-e1696509072572.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 Baltimore police have asked for the public’s help identifying a group of people seen in the area of a shooting at Morgan State University that left five people injured.

Police released surveillance video late Wednesday that shows several people walking in a grassy area. They are seeking the identities of “persons of interest” in Tuesday night’s shooting.

Earlier in the day, Police Commissioner Richard Worley said at least two people opened fire during a dispute between two groups at the university’s homecoming events, but the victims were likely not the shooters’ intended targets. Preliminary evidence indicates the shooters were targeting one person, who wasn’t among the victims, Worley said. All five are expected to survive.

Worley said a third person also pulled a gun during the dispute, though it wasn’t clear whether they pulled the trigger. He said ballistics testing will reveal how many shooters were ultimately involved.

Wednesday morning’s updates from police helped quell rumors circulating online about whether the attack was racially motivated or a planned school shooting on the historically Black university campus in northeast Baltimore.

University President David Wilson announced that all other homecoming events and classes for the remainder of the week, including Saturday’s football game, have been canceled. He said it marked the first cancellation of such events in the school’s history. Some students were seen leaving campus with duffel bags and suitcases Wednesday afternoon.

“Today, we unfortunately find ourselves navigating this tragic event during a time at which we should be celebrating,” Wilson said in a letter to the university community.

The shooting unfolded around 9:30 p.m., shortly after a coronation ceremony for this year’s Mister and Miss Morgan State in the campus auditorium. Attendees were walking from the auditorium to the student center for a coronation ball, which was about to begin when gunfire sent people scattering in fear.

The gunshot victims — four men and one woman — are between ages 18 and 22. Four are Morgan State students.

No arrests have been made yet.

City police and university officials initially warned students of an active shooter and ordered them to shelter in place for hours while SWAT officers went door to door searching for suspects. Worley said police heard gunshots and several dorm windows shattered, so officials initially thought there was an active shooter and acted accordingly.

On campus Wednesday afternoon, workers were replacing the windows and sweeping up broken glass while students milled about — some commenting on the evolving crime scene, which included blood splatters on a concrete walkway and yellow crime tape crisscrossing the adjacent courtyard. A neon sign at one campus entrance flashed: “Morgan family, Morgan strong.”

Emani Jones-Grant, a freshman from New Jersey, said that instead of visiting for homecoming weekend, her family was planning to pick her up Thursday. She said she’s enjoying college overall, but the shooting left her and others feeling shaken.

“The vibe is weird,” she said. “A lot of people are talking about leaving for the weekend.”

Michelle Newman said she drove down from New York after getting frantic calls from her daughter, a freshman, who was having a panic attack as the shooting unfolded Tuesday night, saying a bullet came through her dorm room window.

“She was hysterical,” Newman said. “She called to ask us what she was supposed to do.”

Newman said she planned to bring her daughter home where she would feel safe.

Previous Morgan State homecoming celebrations have also been subject to violence.

During a news conference on campus Wednesday, a reporter with the university’s student newspaper asked officials how they plan to address what has become a trend: Last October, a young man was shot during what officials called an unsanctioned homecoming after-party on the campus, and the year before, a freshman was arrested and charged with shooting his classmate over homecoming weekend.

Morgan State University Police Chief Lance Hatcher said the agency has taken “extraordinary measures to bring additional security resources to campus” in recent years, including increased police presence and surveillance camera coverage. University police officers heard the gunshots while patrolling the campus Tuesday night and responded almost immediately to render aid, officials said.

“Oftentimes you can’t stop a bad actor from doing bad acts, but we will continue to try to ensure the safety of our students,” he said.

Advocates and local leaders said the shooting highlights the drumbeat of trauma students are experiencing in schools across the country.

“It shouldn’t be lost on anyone that this shooting took place during homecoming week for a generation that has been raised on school shooting drills and mass shootings,” said Kris Brown, president of Brady, a nationwide group that advocates for stronger gun controls. “Gun violence has been a daily presence for this generation, and it is now following them into adulthood.”

5 injured after shooting at Morgan State University in Baltimore https://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/national-international/police-warn-of-shots-fired-near-morgan-state-university/4737100/ 4737100 post https://media.nbcnewyork.com/2023/10/26100282111-1080pnbcstations-e1696412709226.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 Five people were wounded in a shooting that interrupted a homecoming week celebration at Morgan State University in Baltimore on Tuesday and prompted an hourslong lockdown at the historically Black college.

The five victims were not the intended targets, police said in an update. They believe at least one person started shooting after a dispute between two groups.

All classes, homecoming activities and the homecoming football game are canceled until further notice, the school’s president said Wednesday afternoon.

“Regarding Homecoming, regrettably for the very first time in Morgan’s history all activities planned around Homecoming will be either cancelled or postponed until the perpetrator(s) of this atrocity have been found and brought to justice,” David Kwabena Wilson said in a statement.

Four of the shooting victims are students at the university, Morgan State Police Chief Lance Hatcher said. The five victims, four males and one female, are between ages 18 and 22. Their injuries were not life-threatening, Police Commissioner Richard Worley told reporters.

Baltimore Police released a video Wednesday asking for help identifying possible persons of interest. In the YouTube video, four people can be seen walking in the same direction. Anyone with information in reference to the identity of these individuals is urged to call detectives at 410-396-2444 or Metro Crime Stoppers at 1-866-7Lockup.

No arrests were announced, and police did not release information about a suspect or suspects. Worley said that investigators didn’t know how many shooters were involved.

“This was such a senseless act of violence perpetrated on our community after what was a family-filled and fun evening of celebrating the pageantry and beauty of our students. But Morgan is a strong family and we will march on with determination to keep moving on,” Wilson said in a statement.

Police believe there was more than one person with a weapon. They’re trying to figure out how many guns were fired. Investigators say the shooting started as a dispute between groups and that one person was the target.

‘Everyone started running’

The shooting happened shortly after the coronation of Mister & Miss Morgan State at the Murphy Fine Arts Center, as students were heading to a campus ball.

Konnor Crowder, a sophomore from Baltimore, said he and his friends had been waiting for the coronation ball to start when they saw people running across the campus.

“First I was wondering what they were running for, then I was wondering where we should go,” he said.

“We saw two gunshots hit the window and everyone started running. It was chaos,” another student said.

Worley said police heard gunshots and several dorm windows shattered, so officials initially thought there was an active shooter on campus and followed appropriate protocols. He said they ended the shelter-in-place order at about 12:30 a.m., after SWAT officers cleared a building where a suspect may have run.

Students sheltered in place for about four hours, as police went room to room looking for suspects.

Shortly after midnight, dozens of students wearing gowns and suits started trickling out of the arts center, where they had been sheltering. Many were trying to process the chaos and fear that overwhelmed an evening of festivities.

Kamani Bell, a freshman who lives in the Thurgood Marshall Dormitory, said he heard the shots from his room. He said an email from the RA for the building had warned residents about construction earlier that day, and that’s initially what he assumed the commotion was.

“I’m going to look out the window and see what’s going on because I’m hearing something. So now I look, I see everyone like running and fleeing from the scene. So, then I realized it was a shooting,” Bell said.

Video showed Bell in his room with friends, lifting his hands up as police forced open the door in their room-by-room search.

On Tuesday, Bell headed back up to his home in Boston to recover from the emotional toll of the shooting.

A map shows where Morgan State University is located.

Orange evidence markers were visible on the ground in front of a building next to the dorm where the shooting occurred. Yellow crime tape encircled the area as officers used flashlights to search for evidence.

Parents gathered at a media staging area outside a police blockade at the south entrance to campus. James Willoughby, a Morgan State alum whose daughter is a freshman, said he wasn’t leaving until he laid eyes on her. “I’m gonna be here until I can physically see her,” he said.

Glenmore Blackwood came to the campus after hearing from his son, a senior who told him the shooting occurred just as the coronation was concluding.

Blackwood said his son was sheltering in place in the arts center’s auditorium. He sang in the ceremony and was planning to host a prayer service afterward.

“That’s my son. He’s going to make sure I know he’s OK,” Blackwood said. “It’s just sad. They were doing a good thing — an event to promote positivity — and all this negativity happens.”

Other parents were unnerved about security, and frustrated by what they called a lack of communication from school officials.

Jose Videjo drove to Baltimore from New York to pick up his freshman daughter. He told News4 that he first heard about the shooting from social media, not from the school.

“As we were waiting for official news from the campus, or from any kind of authority figure, there was none,” Videjo said Tuesday night. “So basically we were relying on the news reports that were mostly rumors. So we were nervous, we don’t know what’s true or what’s not. And they took so long, and the information they gave out was so little, that we still don’t know what really happened. We don’t know what’s going on. We don’t know if the campus is safe.”

“It is unfortunate that this tragedy happened here tonight,” he said. “By no means will it define who we are as a university.”

The university, which has about 9,000 students, was founded in 1867 as the Centenary Biblical Institute, with an initial mission of training men for ministry, according to its website. It moved to its current site in northeast Baltimore in 1917, and was purchased by the state of Maryland in 1939 as it aimed to provide more opportunities for Black citizens.

Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott noted recent declines in the city’s homicide rate and said the shooting Tuesday indicates a need for national gun reform.

“We have to deal with this issue nationally,” he said. “We have to get serious about guns.”

3 teens gunned down, 2 classmates arrested in South Carolina https://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/national-international/3-teens-gunned-down-2-classmates-arrested-in-south-carolina/4711737/ 4711737 post https://media.nbcnewyork.com/2023/09/AP23268641204758.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,200 Two people showed up at an abandoned house where four teenagers were hanging out and opened fire, killing three of them and wounding the fourth in an escalation of an old quibble over a burglary, authorities said Monday in Columbia, South Carolina.

Two 17-year-old Eau Claire High School students were both arrested on three counts of murder, one of attempted murder and possessing a weapon during a violent crime, according to the Richland County Sheriff’s Department. An investigation is ongoing, and more arrests could be made, Deputy Veronica Hill, a public information officer, told The Associated Press Monday afternoon.

The teenagers who were killed also attended Eau Claire High School, according to a statement from Craig Witherspoon, the district superintendent. The lone survivor attended a nearby middle school.

The district provided additional counseling and security at the high school Monday in response to the “unimaginable tragedy,” which Witherspoon decried as “senseless gun violence.”

Sheriff’s deputies responded to the shooting in Columbia, the state capital, just after 2 p.m. Sunday, the sheriff’s department said.

After the two shooters opened fire at the house, they followed the victims as they fled to the backyard and continued firing, according to a redacted incident report. It was part of a “beef” that Lott said began two years ago with a burglary.

Three victims were 16 and 17 years old and died at the hospital, and the fourth victim, who is 14, was released, the sheriff’s department said. The Richland County Coroner’s office identified the deceased as JaKobe Fanning, Caleb Wise and Dre’von Riley.

Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott would not say how the weapons were obtained at a Monday news conference. But, he said, too many Columbia gun owners leave their firearms in cars, where they are easily stolen. The city experienced 100 vehicle break-ins this past weekend, Lott said.

Lott said he held the news conference to address “something that seems to be recurring” in Columbia and nationwide.

Nine people ages 16 to 20 were injured in a park shooting this spring at an event involving students from Columbia-area high schools, officials noted.

Witherspoon and other elected officials called for more out-of-school programming by churches, schools and governments. While the vast majority of young residents do not commit crimes like the weekend slaying, they said, these shootings should not be normalized, they said.

Richland County Councilmember Gretchen Barron said lawmakers cannot legislate “good behavior” and “healthy choices.”

“We need everybody in the village that’s standing behind me and the village that’s out there listening to this,” Lott said. “We need to do more. This proves that we haven’t done enough.”

Gun violence is the ultimate ‘superstorm,' President Biden says as he announces new federal effort https://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/national-international/gun-violence-is-the-ultimate-superstorm-president-biden-says-as-he-announces-new-federal-effort/4704454/ 4704454 post https://media.nbcnewyork.com/2023/09/AP23265700913398.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,200 President Joe Biden said Friday he was determined to stop gun violence in the U.S. as he formally launched the first-ever federal office to be dedicated to uncovering solutions and supporting communities ravaged by shootings.

“After every mass shooting, we hear a simple message … do something. Please do something,” he said from the Rose Garden, where he was joined by lawmakers and families of victims of gun violence. “My administration has been working relentlessly to do something.”

The new office of gun violence prevention will be led by Vice President Kamala Harris, a former prosecutor whose experience is perfect for this effort, Biden said. The office’s goals include ensuring a bipartisan gun safety law passed last year is fully implemented nationwide along with Biden’s executive actions to stop gun violence.

It will seek to find new actions the White House can take unilaterally as further congressional support for gun safety laws seems slim. It will aim to build better support systems in states and cities and coordinate support for families who have lived through mass shootings and violence.

“Shootings are the ultimate superstorm,” Biden said.

But the office is limited in what it can do. In order to tighten restrictions or pass a ban on so-called “assault weapons,” as Biden repeatedly called for, Congress would need to pass legislation. That seems unlikely. In the year since the 2022 law was passed, Republican support for restrictions has slipped.

Still, Biden and Democrats are banking on gun safety as a major party animator for 2024, particularly for younger voters. The president was joined Friday by Rep. Maxwell Frost, D-Fla., the youngest member of Congress, who said he got involved in politics because “I didn’t want to get shot in school.”

Firearms are the No. 1 killer of children in the U.S. So far this year 220 children younger than 11 have died by guns and 1,054 between the ages of 12 and 17 have died.

“We all want our kids to have the freedom to learn how to read and write instead of duck and cover, for God’s sake,” the president said.

Overall, stricter gun laws are desired by a majority of Americans, regardless of what the current gun laws are in their state. That desire could be tied to some Americans’ perceived impact of what fewer guns could mean for the country — namely, fewer mass shootings.

As of Friday, there have been at least 35 mass killings in the U.S. so far in 2023, leaving at least 171 people dead, not including shooters who died, according to a database maintained by The Associated Press and USA Today in partnership with Northeastern University.

Harris said while this violence impacts all communities, it does not do so equally — communities of color are far more likely to suffer.

“I have seen with my own eyes what a bullet does to the human body,” she said. “We cannot normalize any of this.”

Alleged gunman in custody for killing woman, 71, waiting to cross NYC street https://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/local/alleged-gunman-in-custody-for-killing-woman-71-waiting-to-cross-nyc-street-spec/4690056/ 4690056 post https://media.nbcnewyork.com/2023/09/bronx-gunman.png?fit=300,169&quality=85&strip=all

What to Know

  • The alleged gunman in last week’s Mott Haven shooting was arrested Monday, police announced
  • The 21-year-old is accused of gunning down Enriqueta Rivera, who was waiting to cross the street shortly after noon
  • Two women shot that afternoon joined two other innocent bystanders in a growing number of random shootings that had officials speaking out

A gunman accused of firing the bullet that struck and killed a 71-year-old woman as she stood on a Bronx curb waiting to cross the street last week has been arrested, police announced Monday.

The shooter opened fire around 12:30 p.m. on Sept. 14 on East 138th Street near Brook Avenue in the Mott Haven section, according to investigators.

Police say the shooting started with a dispute between two men, one of whom escalated the situation and pulled out a gun. Multiple shots were fired, but both the gunman and his intended target ran off. Detectives suspected each of the men to be local gang members.

By Monday, the NYPD announced the arrest of 21-year-old Joshua Evans on a handful of charges, including murder, attempted murder, manslaughter and assault. Information for his attorney was not immediately known.

Evans, an alleged gang member police say tried shooting at rivals, is accused gunning down Enriqueta Rivera; the 71-year-old was struck in the back by a bullet that was not intended for her. A second victim, a 34-year-old Bronx woman, was hit in the arm in front of a flower shop on the sidewalk.

Members of Rivera’s family gathered outside the precinct Monday night where Evans was escorted out. Enraged, they screamed out, calling him a murderer.

“She was a beautiful person inside and out. She was always happy, she wanted everyone to be together,” her daughter, Neliza Abad Rivera, said.

“A 71-year-old woman was walking on the sidewalk with her shopping cart when she was shot one time in her heart by a bullet that was meant for another, meant for a rival gang member,” NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said at a press conference Monday.

Evans, Kenny revealed, was found that morning hiding out with a relative in Mount Vernon.

“Everyone else pays except the target and it has to stop. There has to be a better way,” Rivera said. “Justice will be served for my mother. Everyone will know her name: Enriquetta Rivera Melendez.”

The two women joined two other innocent bystanders shot in three separate incidents last week, all within a mile of each other. Detectives believe gang members were also behind a shooting on Tuesday that hit an 8-year-old boy.

“We have to address the underlying issues of why young adults are engaging in crews anyway, why we have these ongoing beefs and turf wars fighting over streets that don’t belong to us and they have access to guns,” said Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson.

NYC teen sentenced to 15 years for murder of honor student, 16, shot on walk home: DA https://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/local/crime-and-courts/nyc-teen-sentenced-to-15-years-for-murder-of-honor-student-16-shot-on-walk-home-da/4683102/ 4683102 post https://media.nbcnewyork.com/2022/04/bronx-shooting-victim.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,168 A teenager from the Bronx was sentenced Friday for the broad daylight shooting death of an honor student who was walking home from school when she was killed and two others were hurt, the district attorney announced.

Bronx DA Darcel Clark said that 18-year-old Jeremiah Ryan will serve 15 years to life in prison after pleading guilty to second-degree murder for firing the shots that took the life of Angellyh Yambo within blocks of her high school.

At least six shell casings were recovered from the corner of Saint Ann’s Avenue and East 156th Street in the Mott Haven section of the Bronx, where the 16-year-old Yambo was shot in her upper back on April 8, 2022. The bullets pierced her lung and pulmonary artery. The other two students, both 17, were shot in the leg and buttocks.

“The defendant was in a dispute with two men when he fired multiple shots from a ‘ghost gun’…His actions ended the life of a beautiful young girl and shattered the lives of the survivors and the families of the victims,” said Clark.

The shooting happened outside of the South Bronx Educational Campus, which is home to two schools, Mott Haven Village Prep (where two of the teens attended) and University Heights Secondary School. The third teen went to University Prep Charter High School, a short distance away.

The three students, who police said did not know each other, had recently been let out of school when the shooter opened fire around 1:45 p.m. that afternoon. Video recovered from the area that captured the deadly barrage of gunfire allegedly shows the gunman in a heated exchange with a group of men across the street at the intersection. The senior officials said hand gestures made between the men are “consistent with gang affiliation.”

Additional videos tracked the suspect, Ryan, eastbound on East 156th Street where police located him at his residence on East 161th Street. While patrolling outside the home, police witnessed a black bag thrown out of his window. The two senior officials said officers searched the bag and found an unloaded black ghost gun.

Ryan was previously charged with attempted murder as well, but pleaded guilty only to the murder charge.

Stray bullet kills 71-year-old woman waiting to cross NYC street https://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/local/71-year-old-woman-fatally-shot-in-back-by-stray-bullet-on-nyc-sidewalk-spec/4680048/ 4680048 post https://media.nbcnewyork.com/2023/09/25665927160-1080pnbcstations.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 A 71-year-old woman was killed and a second struck in the arm as stray bullets flew across a Bronx sidewalk on Thursday, police said.

The NYPD locked down the crime scene around lunchtime in the Mott Haven section, on East 138th Street near Brook Avenue. The first 911 calls alerted police to the shooting around 12:37 p.m.

Responding police found the 71-year-old woman, Enriqueta Rivera, with a gunshot wound to her back. Officials said she had been standing by the curb waiting to cross Brook Avenue when she was suddenly struck by a bullet and collapsed to the ground.

Moments later, surveillance video shows a man wearing all black running away from the area.

The second victim, a 34-year-old Bronx resident, was hit in the arm in front of a flower shop on the sidewalk.

“I hear like three shooting. I see the lady in bad condition on the floor and the other lady get shot in the hand. But the lady in the lady in the street was very very bad condition and I see the guy run away,” witness Juan Pimienta said.

Detectives were going door-to-door looking for additional surveillance video. No one is in custody.

Police say the shooting started with a dispute between two men, one of whom escalated the situation and pulled out a gun. Multiple shots were fired, but both the gunman and his intended target ran off. Investigators suspect each of the men to be local gang members.

The two women join two other innocent bystanders shot in three separate incidents this week, all within a mile of each other. Detectives believe gang members were also behind a shooting on Tuesday that hit an 8-year-old boy.

New Mexico governor suspends right to carry firearms in Albuquerque, sparking legal fight https://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/politics/new-mexico-governor-suspends-right-to-carry-firearms-in-albuquerque-sparking-legal-fight/4664838/ 4664838 post https://media.nbcnewyork.com/2023/09/AP23251862505398.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,200 New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham’s emergency order suspending the right to carry firearms in public in and around Albuquerque drew an immediate court challenge from a gun-rights group Saturday, as legal scholars and advocates said they expected.

The National Association for Gun Rights and Foster Haines, a member who lives in Albuquerque, filed documents in U.S. District Court in New Mexico suing Lujan Grisham and seeking an immediate block to the implementation of her order.

The challenge was expected, but even so, the governor’s action Friday was an attempt to “move the debate,” said Jessica Levinson, a law professor at Loyola Marymount’s Loyola Law School in Los Angeles, after Lujan Grisham announced that she was temporarily suspending the right to carry firearms in her state’s largest city and surrounding Bernalillo County.

The governor, a Democrat, said the 30-day suspension, enacted as an emergency public health measure, would apply in most public places, from city sidewalks to parks.

She said state police would be responsible for enforcing what amount to civil violations and carry a fine of up to $5,000.

Bernalillo County District Attorney Sam Bregman, who once served as a Democratic party leader and was appointed by Lujan Grisham, on Saturday joined Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller and Police Chief Harold Medina saying they wouldn’t enforce the order.

“As an officer of the court, I cannot and will not enforce something that is clearly unconstitutional,” said Bregman, the top prosecutor in the Albuquerque area. “This office will continue to focus on criminals of any age that use guns in the commission of a crime.”

Bernalillo County Sheriff John Allen said he was uneasy about how gun owners might respond.

“I am wary of placing my deputies in positions that could lead to civil liability conflicts,” Allen said, “as well as the potential risks posed by prohibiting law-abiding citizens from their constitutional right to self-defense.”

Medina noted that Albuquerque police made more than 200 arrests of suspects in killings in the last two years. Police spokesman Gilbert Gallegos said enforcing the order also could put Albuquerque police in a difficult position with a U.S. Department of Justice police reform settlement.

Lujan Grisham said she was was compelled to act following recent shootings including the death this week of an 11-year-old boy outside a minor league baseball stadium and gunfire last month that killed a 5-year-old girl who was asleep in a motor home. The governor also cited the shooting death in August of a 13-year-old girl in Taos County.

“No person, other than a law enforcement officer or licensed security officer, shall possess a firearm … either openly or concealed,” the governor’s order states.

Levinson told The Associated Press Friday over the phone that Lujan Grisham would draw a court fight, saying the governor was “bumping up against the Second Amendment, no doubt about it.”

“And we have a very conservative Supreme Court that is poised to expand Second Amendment rights,” Levinson added.

Dudley Brown, founder and president of the Colorado-based gun-rights group, called the governor’s action unconstitutional.

“She needs to be held accountable for stripping the God-given rights of millions away with the stroke of a pen,” he said in a statement announcing the lawsuit and request for a restraining order. A court hearing was not immediately set.

The top Republican in the New Mexico Senate, Greg Baca of Belen, also denounced Lujan Grisham’s order as an infringement on the gun rights of law-abiding citizens. Dan Lewis, who serves on the nonpartisan Albuquerque City Council, called the order an unconstitutional edict.

Lujan Grisham said gun owners still would be able to transport guns to private locations such as a gun range or gun store if the firearm is in a container or has a trigger lock or mechanism making it impossible to discharge.

The governor’s order calls for monthly inspections of firearms dealers statewide to ensure compliance with gun laws and for the state Department of Health to compile a report on gunshot victims at hospitals that includes age, race, gender and ethnicity, along with the brand and caliber of firearm involved.

Levinson said she was not aware of any other governor taking a step as restrictive as Lujan Grisham. But she pointed to a proposal by California Gov. Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, to amend the U.S. Constitution to harden federal gun laws.

“I don’t think it will be a political loss for (Lujan Grisham) to be overturned,” Levinson said. “She can say she did everything she could but was stopped by the courts.”

Jacob Charles, a law professor at Pepperdine Caruso School of Law who studies the Second Amendment, noted that the Supreme Court, in the June 2022 Bruen case, expanded the right of law-abiding Americans to carry guns in public for self-defense.

He said that ruling takes away the ability to take into account arguments about a compelling government interest, like the gun violence that Lujan Grisham said prompted her order. Now, judges must solely rely on whether any similar historical examples exist.

“They can’t assess whether or not this is going to reduce gun violence. They can’t assess whether or not there are other alternatives that government could have done,” Charles said. He later added, “What it means is that contemporary costs and benefits aren’t part of the analysis.”

New murder charges brought against the man accused of killing UVA football players https://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/national-international/new-murder-charges-brought-against-the-man-accused-of-killing-uva-football-players/4663750/ 4663750 post https://media.nbcnewyork.com/2022/11/UVA_Inset.png?fit=300,169&quality=85&strip=all Authorities have upgraded murder charges against the man accused of fatally shooting three University of Virginia football players last year.

A special grand jury in Charlottesville issued the new aggravated murder indictments against Christopher Darnell Jones Jr. If convicted, the 23-year-old would serve a mandatory life sentence. They are the most serious murder charges available in Virginia after it abolished the death penalty in 2021.

Jones was a UVA student in November 2022 and a former member of the football team when police say he opened fire on a charter bus that had brought back students from a field trip.

Football players Lavel Davis Jr., D’Sean Perry and Devin Chandler were killed, while a fourth member of the team, Mike Hollins, and another student were wounded.

Jones had initially been charged with second-degree murder after his arrest.

Albemarle County Commonwealth’s Attorney James Hingeley said in a news release that the new indictments were returned Wednesday.

Liz Murtagh, the public defender in Charlottesville and Albemarle County appointed to represent Jones, said she is “sorry the prosecutor chose to go this route” but declined further comment.

A 21-year-old man was arrested after allegedly killing another man and hurting four others after he opened fire outside an illegal end-of-summer party at a Long Island event space, police said.

Kyle Matthews was charged with second-degree murder and weapon possession for the Aug. 21 shooting in Valley Stream. Witnesses said shots were fired at a space called Dopies around 8:30 p.m. A semi-automatic gun was used to spray eight bullets into a crowd, striking a number of people, Nassau County police said in the aftermath of the gunfire.

A 20-year-old man from Brooklyn, identified as Deandre Carter, was killed and four others under the age of 18 — including a 12-year-old boy and three 17 year olds — were hurt. Nassau County Police Det. Lt. Stephen Fitzpatrick said that Matthews walked up to the five people standing in front of the party and opened fire with two handguns.

Police said Matthews is a known Bloods member who shot at the party on Ocean Avenue because it was being hosted by people known to members of the Crips gang. The 12-year-old boy was hit in the shoulder, police said, and two others walked in to Queens Hospital with injuries to their leg and knee, respectively.

People were seen running down the block right after the gunfire broke out. Those who live in the area have described it as highly unusual for a shooting or anything of like it to occur in the residential neighborhood.

A memorial now stands outside the event space. Bullet holes can still be seen in the windows from the shots fired allegedly by Matthews and at least one other.

Matthews defiantly denied have any involvement in the shooting, telling reporters “I didn’t do s–t!”

Nassau County Police Commissioner Pat Ryder said Matthews, of Far Rockaway and Uniondale, was previously arrested in Dec. 2021 for having a loaded gun. He was sentenced to three years of probation, and a year later, was again arrested for gun possession — but was released on bail.

On Thursday, Matthews was remanded and sent back to jail. His next court appearance is scheduled for later in September.

“This individual should have been in jail, this senseless murder would not have happened and the other three victims shot and wounded,” said Ryder.

At least 4 people shot near Brooklyn playground, 1 suspect on the loose: NYPD https://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/local/at-least-4-people-hurt-in-brooklyn-shooting-police-sources/4655130/ 4655130 post https://media.nbcnewyork.com/2023/09/Bed-stuy-shooting.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169

What to Know

  • Police were investigating a daytime shooting in Bed-Stuy after a gunman opened fire, striking three targets and a woman caught in the gunfire
  • A group of suspects fled in a vehicle and were pursued by nearby officers, according to police, but did not make it far
  • One suspect remained on the run late Wednesday

Police have three suspects in custody reportedly responsible for afternoon gun violence in a Brooklyn neighborhood that sent four victims to a local hospital, law enforcement sources said Wednesday.

A fourth suspect remains in the wind after the group took off from the Bed-Stuy shooting scene, but crashed their car a short distance later, the sources said.

The gun shots were fired around 3:30 p.m. in the area of Marcus Garvey Boulevard and Park Avenue near the Sumner Houses. At least one of the people shot was said to be in critical condition.

Law enforcement sources said the four gun shot victims range in age between 21 and 34; three are man, one is a woman. The youngest victim was critically hurt after being shot twice in the chest, they said.

The woman, police said, was an unintended target caught in the line of fire. One of the bullets grazed her shoulder, according to officials.

Police say the shooter stepped out of a Hyundai Santa Fe and waited for three men to cross the street before opening fire. The shooter got back into the SUV and sped away with three others who were waiting for him. Officers who heard the shots followed them.

The four suspects did not manage to get far — Myrtle Avenue and Throop Avenue — before striking two motorists. Once the car was struck, everyone inside took off running on foot.

“Once they hit me they couldn’t drive no more so they get out of the car and they started running this way,” Luis Cuan, one of the crash victims, said.

Despite police catching three of the suspects, police said they did not recover a gun. It was not clear if the suspected shooter was one of the three suspects apprehended moments after the shooting.

“It’s a strong possibility that is gang motivated that’s something going to be verified in the investigation,” an NYPD official said Wednesday.

The investigation is ongoing.

Shooting at Louisiana high school football game leaves teen dead and adult wounded https://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/national-international/shooting-at-louisiana-high-school-football-game-leaves-teen-dead-and-adult-wounded/4645667/ 4645667 post https://media.nbcnewyork.com/2023/09/230902-Port-Allen-High-School-mjf-1058-2bdb7e.webp?fit=300,180&quality=85&strip=all Gunfire broke out during a high school football game on a warm late-summer evening in Louisiana, killing a 16-year old student and wounding a woman in the arm, authorities said Saturday.

Police have made no arrests and investigators still don’t know why the violence erupted at halftime Friday in an area next to the stands, Sgt. Landon Groger with the West Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office said.

A medical helicopter landed on the field at Port Allen High School and the two victims were rushed to the hospital, where the teen was pronounced dead, Groger said. The woman’s injuries were not considered life-threatening.

The game was suspended as stunned spectators headed for the parking lot, which was filled with emergency vehicles.

“We don’t know what led up to the event and we don’t yet know if it was a targeted shooting or random,” Groger said by phone Saturday, adding, “We want to take our time and cover this from all angles.”

The West Baton Rouge School Board said crisis teams will be available to talk with and assist students when classes resume after Labor Day weekend.

“Our first priorities at this time are to assist the family of the student who died, and all our students, and to assist the West Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office in its investigation,” the board said in a statement Saturday.

Security would be increased at schools, and Superintendent Chandler Smith said the district will bolster existing programs “to teach our students that violence destroys many people’s lives.”

Port Allen, home to nearly 5,000 people, is located across the Mississippi River from Baton Rouge.

Wild gun battle on Connecticut street sends dozens running; 3 wounded https://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/local/wild-gun-battle-on-connecticut-street-sends-dozens-running-3-wounded/4617985/ 4617985 post https://media.nbcnewyork.com/2023/08/25193754601-1080pnbcstations.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 A terrifying shootout in Connecticut was caught on camera, as well as the sounds of some 30 rounds crisscrossing the street that sent dozens of people fleeing to safety Tuesday night.

Police in Bridgeport are looking for multiple shooters after three people were shot around 10 p.m. The chaos erupted on Park Avenue around; flying bullets had people scrambling for cover.

One of the victims is in critical condition, police said, and investigators found that more than 30 rounds had been fired.

Officers responded to the 1200 block of Park Avenue and found a 38-year-old Bridgeport woman who had been shot in the leg and a 50-year-old Bridgeport man who had been shot in the face.

The man and woman were transported to the hospital and both are reported to be in stable condition, according to police.

That man was back home on Wednesday, the site where a bullet entered through his front door.

“I got hit in the face yesterday. With a bullet!” man said.

That bullet is now lodged in the face of a man who has asked not to be identified. He was home with his family when he noticed a growing crowd yelling near Park and Wood avenues late Tuesday. He and his family took cover.

“At first it was like machine guns, then it was pop. Pop pop pop pop. They were really having a shootout here. It was crazy,” he said.

Not even the metal door could keep them safe.

“This is a solid door, metal door and that bullet went through it like nothing, like paper,” he explained.

The injured man believes the wild shootout was sparked by people who do not live in the neighborhood.

Police are looking for multiple shooters and they are asking for help from the public to solve this case.

Anyone with information is asked to call the case officer, Detective David Garcia, at 203-581-5233 or the Bridgeport Police tips line at 203-576-TIPS.

Child shot on Long Island as murder suspect opens fire on police at apartment complex https://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/local/child-shot-on-long-island-as-murder-suspect-opens-fire-on-police-at-apartment-complex/4616570/ 4616570 post https://media.nbcnewyork.com/2023/08/Long-Island-child-shot-wi-inset.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 A young girl suffered serious injuries when she was shot by a man who opened fire on Long Island police while barricaded inside his home, according to police.

The incident occurred around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday in the hamlet of Ridge, Suffolk County police said. Detectives went to an apartment on Ticonderoga Court to follow up on a murder that took place in Islip on June 19.

The suspect in that case, 38-year-old Gary Jones, fired shots at investigators after they arrived. According to police, detectives were interviewing a friend of Jones when they realized that the suspect was in the home, and then told the friend and other children inside to get outside.

That’s when Jones came out from another room with a gun in hand and opened fire on the detectives, who quickly backed out the house, police said.

One of the bullets fired by Jones whizzed through a wall and struck a 3-year-old girl in the next apartment, according to police. Responding officers, realizing there was no time to wait for an ambulance, took matters into their own hands.

Suffolk police officer Christian Hernandez and detective Luis Cabrera worked to stop the bleeding, then carried her to a police car and drove her to Riverhead Hospital.

The child had surgery for a gunshot wound and was expected to survive.

A police robot was sent into the apartment right after the shots were fired, and found Jones dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Suffolk County police said.

Police body camera footage captured her father’s anguish. James Toney held his daughter after a bullet struck her abdomen and exited out her back.

“That’s my daughter, that’s my daughter. The shots came through my wall as she was playing on the couch,” Toney explains as he shows the bullet holes in the family home.

Toney called it a night he wouldn’t wish on anyone.

“I’m here just raising my family, trying to give them a better way. It seems like even inside your home, you gotta watch what your neighbor is doing,” he said.

At least 1 dead, 4 hurt in shooting during party at Long Island event space: Police https://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/local/at-least-1-dead-4-hurt-in-shooting-during-party-at-long-island-event-space-police/4612768/ 4612768 post https://media.nbcnewyork.com/2023/08/Long-Island-party.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 One person was killed and four others were injured in a shooting at an illegal end-of-summer party at a Long Island event space, police said.

It was not immediately clear what led up to the deadly incident in Valley Stream, but there was a large presence by Nassau County police in the area of Ocean Avenue for much of early Tuesday morning in the aftermath of the shooting.

Witnesses said the gunfire went down at a space called Dopies around 8:30 p.m. Monday. A semi-automatic gun was used to spray eight bullets into a crowd, striking a number of people, police said at a press conference. A 20-year-old man from Brooklyn was killed and four others under the age of 18 were hurt.

A 12-year-old was shot in his shoulder, according to police, and was recovering at the hospital. Two 17-year-old males walked in to Queens Hospital with injuries to their leg and knee, respectively, while a 17-year-old female from Brooklyn suffered a cut to her hand.

Police said they are looking for a man in dark clothing who was last seen heading to Queens.

“There was 50-60 people there. They didn’t all stay around when the shots were fired, so we have a lot of work to do on making this case,” Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder said.

One partygoer said that it was a farewell-to-summer event with mostly young people attending, when things turned hostile. Police said the party was illegal because the rental hall was selling tickets at the door and was offering alcohol inside. As a result, the owner of the rental hall could face charges.

County officials said they will start upping the pressure on owners in order to shut similar kinds of parties down quickly.

People were seen running down the block right after the gunfire broke out. Those who live in the area said it is highly unusual for a shooting or anything of like it to occur in the residential neighborhood.

Video showed officers securing the neighborhood and looking for evidence.

The street remained closed to traffic for hours. An investigation is ongoing.

Video shows moment Uber driver and passengers get caught in crossfire of DC shootout https://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/national-international/uber-driver-passengers-dodge-gunfire-in-nw-this-should-be-my-head/4601676/ 4601676 post https://media.nbcnewyork.com/2023/08/image-36-3-e1692270996360.png?fit=300,169&quality=85&strip=all Video captured the terrifying moments an Uber driver and two passengers were caught in a shootout early Sunday in Northwest D.C. They were uninjured, though bullets flew through the windshield.

The shooting occurred in an alley called Saint Matthews Court, near Rhode Island Avenue NW. It’s just outside the Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle, near office buildings and popular nightclubs downtown.

Omar Al-Furaiji was working as an Uber driver and had just picked up two passengers when a barrage of gunfire erupted around his SUV. His dashcam footage captured the moment when he and his passengers heard the shots and ducked for cover.

Video shows that when the shots initially go off, Al-Furaiji looks right and left, briefly searching for the cause of the nonstop shooting. Then he crouches down toward the front passenger seat. His passenger on the left dips down and clutches the other passenger. Then they grab their stuff, get out and run, staying close to the ground.

After the seconds of gunfire, Al-Furaiji grasps at where a bullet narrowly missed his head. He looks at a car on his left, where someone gets in and drives away.

From his rear camera, a car can be seen abruptly stopping and hitting a trashcan. Sirens are heard in the background.

Al-Furaiji showed NBC Washington where his windshield was hit with two bullets.

“The bullets came in one here and one here. This should be my head. This should be my chest,” he said, pointing at the bullet holes.

One bullet hit the left side of his seat, went through the headrest, sailed through a backseat headrest and exited through the back of the SUV.

No one inside the Uber was hit by bullets, but Al-Furaiji said doctors removed 15 pieces of glass from his skin. The glass shattered and fell on him when the bullets pierced the vehicle.

Al-Furaiji said he’s unsure if wants to continue working as an Uber driver.

“To be honest, I’m scared to even go inside car,” he said.

He immigrated from Iraq to find a safer place to live.

Police said Al-Furaiji and his passengers were not the intended targets. No information on suspects or arrests was immediately released.

Man accused of firing shots outside Jewish school in Tennessee charged with multiple crimes https://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/national-international/man-accused-of-firing-shots-outside-jewish-school-in-tennessee-charged-with-multiple-crimes/4559945/ 4559945 post https://media.nbcnewyork.com/2023/08/AP23212759149609.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,225 A man suspected of trying to enter a Jewish school with a gun in Memphis, Tennessee, on Monday and firing shots outside the building has been charged with multiple crimes, the lead agency looking into the shooting said Wednesday.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said Joel Bowman, 31, of Stanton, Tennessee, was charged with criminal attempted second-degree murder, reckless endangerment, possessing a firearm during the commission or attempt to commit a dangerous felony, carrying weapons on school property, and assault against a first responder.

Bowman remained hospitalized in Memphis as of Wednesday, the bureau said. Officers shot Bowman after finding his truck soon after he left the school, and he was hospitalized in critical condition, police said at the time. Bowman had exited the truck with a firearm in hand, and the “situation escalated,” the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said Wednesday.

A message left at one phone listing for Bowman wasn’t immediately returned, and a second phone listing rang unanswered. Representatives of the prosecutor’s office and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation didn’t immediately respond to an email asking if Bowman had an attorney who could speak on his behalf.

Bowman had tried to enter Margolin Hebrew Academy-Feinstone Yeshiva of the South on Monday afternoon but was denied entrance into the building, the bureau said. He fired several shots and then left in a maroon pickup truck, police have said.

No one at the school was injured. Classes were not in session, and limited staff and construction workers were present, a security official said.

Adams outlines $485 million ‘blueprint' to address NYC gun violence https://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/local/adams-outlines-485-million-blueprint-to-address-nyc-gun-violence/4552076/ 4552076 post https://media.nbcnewyork.com/2023/07/adams_guns.png?fit=300,169&quality=85&strip=all New York City released a community safety plan on Monday that outlines steps to address gun violence in all five boroughs.

According to Mayor Eric Adams, the more than $485 million plan will double public safety efforts, invest in hardest-hit communities, support youth, and activate levels of city government to prioritize prevention-based public safety approaches.

The report builds on the city’s 18-month effort to reduce gun violence and culminates months of engagement with communities most affected by gun violence. More than 50 task force members, representing 20 city agencies, engaged approximately 1,500 community residents over the course of spring 2023 through community meetings and youth town halls.

“Public safety is not just a prerequisite, but the path to prosperity. It is what we have campaigned for and what we have delivered. Overall, crime has decreased citywide year-to-date, and our numbers continue to trend in the right direction. Public safety work is never done and even a single loss of life from gun violence is a tragedy,” said Mayor Adams. “Today, we are taking our efforts to end gun violence to the next level with this new ‘Plan for Community Safety.’”

The recommendations presented in the report represent a holistic approach to community safety, focusing on prevention and intervention strategies that use a public health and community development model to address the root causes of gun violence, according to the mayor.

To that end, the task force identified seven strategies in the report based on months of community engagement. These strategies encompass new and existing investments, totaling more than $485 million, to provide early interventions for youth, increase employment and entrepreneurship opportunities, improve housing security, facilitate access to public benefits, strengthen institutions communities, foster connections to mental health services, and strengthen police-community relations.

  • Early Intervention: $118.3 million to increase early supports, including mentoring opportunities, for youth to prevent involvement in gun violence.
  • Housing: $57.5 million to improve existing housing conditions, especially for public housing residents, and increase access to transitional, supportive, and permanent housing units.
  • Navigation and Benefits: $67.8 million to help New Yorkers access the public benefits they deserve and better assist justice-related individuals and families navigating benefit programs.
  • Community Vitality: $8.64 million to invest in public spaces, including parks, playgrounds, and community centers to make neighborhoods safer and more vibrant.
  • Employment and Entrepreneurship: $118.5 million to focus on opportunities and skills training for young New Yorkers and those involved in justice to provide pathways to sustainable, well-paying jobs.
  • Trauma-Informed Care: $106.66 million to bolster mental health resources for youth and others with a diagnosed mental illness, and ensure an appropriate crisis response for those experiencing mental health episodes.
  • Police and Community Relations: $2.6 million to strengthen the bonds of trust between police and communities by enabling greater collaboration on neighborhood safety initiatives, ensuring more effective policing that balances the twin imperatives of security and justice .

An additional $1.5 million will go toward engagement and evaluation to build an infrastructure to measure progress on the above strategies. Ultimately, the state contributed $6 million to the general plan.

According to the report, approximately 92 percent of the city’s gun violence is concentrated in 30 police stations in the five boroughs. Six of these, representing 25 percent of shooting incidents and 39 percent of confirmed shootings citywide in 2022, are prioritized for the new and expanded investments recommended in the report. The six quarters are:

  • Barracks 40: Port Morris, Mott Haven and Melrose.
  • Barracks 42: Morrisania, Claremont and Crotona Park.
  • Barracks 44: Grand Concourse, Bronx Terminal Market and Yankee Stadium.
  • Barracks 47: Wakefield, Woodlawn, Baychester and Williamsbridge.
  • Barracks 73: Brownsville and Ocean Hill.
  • Barracks 75: Eastern New York and Cypress Hill

The city also benefits from the support of New York State and outside partners, including Everytown for Gun Safety and Trinity Wall Street. These resources will be used to strengthen the Crisis Management System, which deploys violence interrupters in communities most at risk of violence to reduce conflicts before they turn deadly.
